Photography
In 2013 I started college, and when they explained it would cost no different to take my classes abroad or to stay on campus, I didn’t hesitate. I packed everything into storage, spent one month living on a couch, and took as many classes abroad, as I could.
I started in Brazil and made my way through France, Portugal, and Madagascar. I brought my camera everywhere. With help from my dad, for my 8th-grade project, I practiced using a Nixon camera. I found I had so much more appreciation for my second-hand camera and its old-school manual setting than I did for an automatic point-and-shoot. It actually felt like art to have so much control over the light that comes into your camera.
Taking photos throughout my travels was a beautiful experience that brought purpose to my walks and explorations, and I never felt alone, even when no one from my class wanted to join me.
A couple years later my camera broke. Then the camera on my phone broke. I got a new phone, but still have the iPhone 8. I lost the drive to go out on walks just to photograph, even after I started traveling again.
But with a new camera for Christmas and some new projects for 2024, I hope to keep working. Until then, enjoy little fragments and hilltops, houses, and landscapes of Madagascar, Brazil, and Portugal.
